Si un oisillon s'imprègne d'un humain, il ne pourra jamais s'épanouir dans la nature. Les sanctuaires regorgent d'oiseaux adultes en bonne forme physique, mais incapables de prendre soin d'eux-mêmes, ils doivent donc passer le reste de leur vie avec des humains.

Mais nous souhaitons que nos chiens se connectent à nous, qu'ils créent un lien.

L'imprégnation chez le chien ne se produit pas comme chez les oiseaux : il s'agit plutôt d'un attachement fort. Celui-ci se développe plus facilement chez un jeune chien, mais peut survenir à tout moment avec un partenaire humain, d'autres animaux ou même des objets.

Cet attachement procure au chien un sentiment de sécurité. C'est pourquoi nous allons parler de jeu, car le temps de jeu avec votre chien est l'un des meilleurs moyens de développer le lien que vous souhaitez. Le jeu établira une relation où votre chien cherchera à vous faire plaisir.

Les signes d'imprégnation incluent un chien qui recherche votre compagnie, qui maintient le contact visuel, qui vous suit partout, qui est excité à votre retour après une absence et qui répond à vos demandes plus facilement qu'avec les autres. Les chiens utilisent le langage corporel pour communiquer et, si vous vivez avec un chien, il serait judicieux d'explorer les signes d'un chien heureux.

Voici quelques messages canins concernant le jeu :

🎆- Couché ou s'inclinant

🎆- Remuement de la queue (souvent signe de bonne volonté, mais pas toujours)

🎆- Aboiements (même un grognement peut indiquer un moment de jeu)

🎆- Excitation (cercles fous, élan d'énergie)

🎆- Coup de nez – comme un bonjour, es-tu là ?

🎆- Porter un jouet, comme une invitation à se joindre à vous

Aime-t-il tirer, jouer à cache-cache ou courir après une balle ? Préfère-t-il avoir un jouet dans la gueule et que vous le poursuiviez ? Aime-t-il courir en rond et sauter ? Aime-t-il les courses d'obstacles ou jouer à cache-cache avec des friandises ? Avez-vous un berger qui veut vous ramener à la base ? Aime-t-il chanter ?

 Toutes ces méthodes permettent de créer un lien avec votre chien, ce qui, au final, créera une situation positive où votre chien vous fera confiance, vous lui ferez confiance et vous souhaiterez tous deux vous faire plaisir. L'imprégnation est en réalité une forme de camaraderie mutuelle, caractéristique de la plupart des chiens.

So You Wanna Play? Imprinting

If a baby bird imprints on a human, they will never be able to succeed in the wild. Sanctuaries are full of adult birds who are physically fit, but who cannot take care of themselves, so they must live the rest of their lives with humans.

But we want our dogs to connect with us – to bond.

Imprinting in dogs isn't like in birds, but rather refers to a strong attachment. This develops most easily in a younger dog, but can happen at any time with a primary caregiver, other animals, or even to objects. 

This attachment makes the dog feel safe and secure. And that is why we are going to talk about playing, because play time with your dog is one of the best ways to develop the bond that you want. Play time will establish a relationship in which your dog wants to please you.

Signs of imprinting include a dog seeking your company, maintaining eye contact, following you around, being excited when you return after an absence, and responding to your commands more readily than with others.  

Dogs use body language to communicate and it would be good, if you are living with one, to explore signs of a happy dog.

Here are a few dog communications around play time:

-            Attention on you, ears forward, relaxed body

-            Lying down, or bowing

-            Tail wagging (often a sign of willingness, but not always)

-            Barking (even growling can be a sign of play time)

-            Zoomies (excitement)

-            Nose boop – like a hello, are you there?

-            The Sillies (mad circles, rush of energy)

-            Carrying around a toy, like an invitation to join

Do they like tugging, or play hide and seek, or chasing a ball? Do they prefer to have a toy in their mouth and have you chase them? Do they like to run in silly circles and jump? Do they like obstacle courses or hide and go seek with treats? Do you have a shepherd who wants to get you back to home base? Do they like to sing?

All of these are ways to create a bond with your dog which will, ultimately, create a positive situation in which your dog trusts you, you trust your dog, and you both want to please each other. When we speak of imprinting, we are really talking about a mutual companionship which is the particularly specialty of most dogs.
